Rookie Hype – Round 10

With the dreaded bye rounds just 1 week away, selecting the right rookie is absolutely paramount as these are the rookies you will likely have on your bench come finals time later in the year.

This means we need to find players who will have relative job security while still producing decent scores.

ON THE BUBBLE
These are the players who have played two games and their price is set to increase over the next few weeks. This week there is only a couple of players worth considering. Sam Darley from the GWS Giants is the ideal replacement for a player like Thomas Bugg who has reached his price maximum and has a high B/E (break-even). Darley sat on the pine for 3 quarters before being released from the vest to rack up 42 points. The only issue with Darley is job security and whether you can afford to take the risk. Darley has the round 11 bye, meaning he will be out next week, make sure you have the cover and he fits within your bye strategy.

The other to consider strongly is Alex Sexton from the Gold Coast Suns. In his two games this season he has scored 22 (Vest) and 60 on the weekend. The upside to Sexton is that he is a (FWD/MID) dual position and he has the bye in round 13 meaning you’ll get the next 3 rounds of him playing and acting as cover for your round 11/12 FWD/MIDS.

The others on the bubble include Zeph Skinner (Western Bulldogs), Tommy Walsh(Sydney) and the much hyped Josh Bootsma (Carlton). I’d stay away from both as neither has great job security or scoring ability at this time.

FIRST UP
Last weekend a lot of players made their debut for 2012 with Aaron Black (North Melbourne) the leading contender with 55 points. Black has now been in the system for 3 seasons making his debut in 2011. The West Australian was highly touted at the end of 2009 and was a surprise to many to slide to the Kangaroos at pick 25 with many expecting him to go just outside the top 10. Before getting drafted he starred in a WAFL colts match with six goals, 26 disposals, seven marks and 13 hit-outs. Black is definitely one to watch and should be strongly considered after his bye as a round 12 target.

THe others Elliott Yeo, (Brisbane, 54 points), Marley Williams (Collingwood, 39), Ben Griffiths (Richmond, 37), Daniel Pearce (Western Bulldogs, 36), Alik Magin (Gold Coasy, 20) Jonathan Simpkin (Geelong, 12) are all on the watch list for one more week. Keep an eye out for Jamie Elliott from (Collingwood, 11) who could be a surprise if given more game time.

OVER THE LIMIT
Dayne Zorko continued to show everyone his ability scoring 94 points on the weekend against North. This followed games of 26 (Vested) and 96 giving Zorko an average of 72 ppg and a B/E of -84 He has already gone up $58,900 and is likely to do the same after this round. It is now or never to jump onto Zorko. At his price he is still a must have player.

CASH COW PADDOCK
Dylan Shiel has likely hit his price maximum and despite having decent numbers it’s time to cash in. Another to consider is Thomas Bugg who at $286,700 and a B/E of 84 after only averaging 56.7 in his last 3 appears to have maximised in price.

WRITTEN WARNING
The more experienced rookies of Magner (55), McDonald (72) and Horsley (52) all had disappointing weeks and have been told to lift their work rate if they wish to stay in our Dream Teams any longer.

ALMOST KEEPERS? (Putting the gloves on)
While I just mentioned Horsley as getting a warning he has been #BRILLIANT this season averaging 95.80 over 5 games and is an ideal candidate for that sixth midfield spot. Two GWS players Adam Treloar (ave. 80.83) and Devon Smith (ave. 71.88) have almost locked themselves into our sides as first emergencies with consistent performances and regular games. The upside is that both as FWD/MID dual position players.

SHARPEN THE AXE
It’s time to SHARPEN THE AXE if you still have Adam Kennedy ($199,300) has well and truly hit the rookie wall. Darren Pfeiffer (31 on the weekend) is another who is disappointing. His disposal efficiency is not fantastic and his job security must be questioned.

S.O.S.
Has anyone seen Lee Spurr? (ave. 49.33 over 3 games) Plays two games tempts us to bring him into our sides has one game and disappears. Hopefully this is not a repeat of Aaron Hall (Gold Coast) disappearing indefinitely.
