GWS Mini Draft: Jaeger O’Meara & Brad Crouch – The Hype List (2013)

GWS Mini Draft: Jaeger O’Meara & Brad Crouch – The Hype List (2013)

Name: Jaeger O’Meara
Position: Midfielder
Club: Gold Coast
Value DreamTeam: $108,500
Value SuperCoach: $115,900

As a junior playing in the WAFL for Perth, the comparisons to Chris Judd were touted after he kicked an impressive 4 goals in his debut. He had recruiters from around the country eager to get him to their club, with Fremantle particularly strongly interested in finding away to get him to the club.

Jaeger O’Meara eventually was the first player selected out of the eventual 2013 rookie crop, going to the Gold Coast Suns in the GWS mini draft at selection 1 in exchange for Selection 4 in the 2011 National Draft (Will Hoskin-Elliott).

O’Meara potentially would have been the first selection in the 2012 National Draft ahead of Lachie Whitfield. During 2012 O’Meara spent his time at the Suns, training throughout preseason and being granted permission to play in the NAB Cup. During his season at the Suns he has already put on 7kg of muscle making him an imposing figure for a 1st year player.

O’Meara would also go onto play 6 games in the NEAFL before a groin injury would sideline him for the rest of the season.

“Jaeger bomb…hunter to hunted by Simon White”

Jaeger O’Meara will get plenty of game time in a young and developing side. With the bigger bodies of Ablett, Rischitelli and the return from injury of 2010 National Draft selection 1 David Swallow, O’Meara should have time to find his feet outside on a wing. He also has the advantage of having already been through preseason once before compared to those drafted this season. Jaeger O’Meara should be among the first rookies picked this season.

He should not have any real competition for a spot in the Gold Coast side, but expect some pressure to come from first round selection Jesse Lonergan who comes to the club with a mature body, ready for AFL football.

Name:Brad Crouch
Position: Midfielder
Club: Adelaide
Value DreamTeam: $108,500
Value SuperCoach: $115,900

SANFL Season Highlights

Brad Crouch was selected with the second GWS mini-draft pick with Adelaide trading their first round pick 10 in the 2011 National Draft as well as their Phil Davis compensation selection (Pick 17 2012 Draft)

In 2011 while playing for North Ballart, Crouch averaged 28.6 touches a game. This lead the Adelaide football club, under recruiting manager Matt Rendell to select Crouch over heavily fancied local SA players Ben Kennedy (Pick 19, 2012; Collingwood) and Jimmy Toumpas (Pick 4, 2012; Melbourne).

Crouch had an impressive 2012 playing senior football in the SANFL for eventual runners up West Adelaide Bloods. This included a dominating display in the Preliminary Final for the Bloods where he accumulated 31 disposals (Yes, AFL Prospectus says 29, here is the SANFL stat page. Click Here.) that included 20 kicks, 11 handballs, 6 marks, 3 tackle, 7 clearances and 1 goal. In total he played 17 matches for West Adelaide in arguably the toughest football competition outside the AFL.

Brad Crouch may be the forgotten player lost in the hype around O’Meara and the 2012 Draft selection Number 1 Lachie Whitfield. Crouch if available in the Draft would have been selected very early. With 2 full preseason and a full season of senior SANFL behind him Crouch will push for a role in the Adelaide side in 2013. Crouch may begin his career in the substitutes vest so watch his NAB Cup form and whether the Adelaide list has injuries in the midfield.

Crouch will definitely play in 2013, the only question is how much?
Predicted Average: 65 (Sub Effected) DreamTeacm-SuperCoach
